What's important in life

Some of you may remember the floods in the fall of 2013 in Colorado.  A slow-moving cold front stalled over Colorado and then clashed with warm humid monsoonal air from the south.  This resulted in heavy rain and catastrophic flooding along Colorado's Front Range from Colorado Springs north to Fort Collins.  I remember the floods because a schoolmate of mine lost everything -- he and his wife had invested their life savings in a building that was destroyed.

Another person impacted by the floods was Damon Redd, the founder of Kind Design.  He woke up to find both his home and business under five feet of water and mud. He had put five years into building his company - it was all gone in an instant.

He called family and friends to come over to help salvage what they could.  Much was lost.

What Damon discovered in this moment was how generous and supportive people were.  His family and friends dropped whatever they were doing, with no questions asked to come and help him.

What ultimately saved the company was a Facebook post. Damon had designed some hats before the flood.  When some samples of the hats arrived a few days after the disaster, he felt his design reflected Colorado’s strength after the flood. He posted a picture of the hat on Facebook, and the post went viral. As a result they ended up pre-selling enough hats to save the entire company.

He said that the flood was the best thing that ever happened to the company.   It forced him to rethink how they did everything. He "reset" and started the company again with a different direction.

As Damon Redd said, "Losing everything also gave me a new perspective on what’s important in life. It got me thinking more about family, less about material things... The flood made me aware that you can replace physical things, but you can’t replace memories. Now I put more value on the irreplaceable things."
